The Scaled Quail (Callipepla squamata) is a species of bird (class Aves) in the familiy of New World Quails (Odontophoridae).
A plump, short legged, chickenlike game bird with a distinctive short peaked white crest that resembles a tuft of cotton. Named for the scaly appearance of its breast and back feathers. Sexes are similar.
Found in dry open habitats in the arid regions of the Southwestern United States to Central Mexico. Widespread and common throughout its range.
