Overview

The Red Shoveler (Spatula platalea) is a species of waterfowl (family Anatidae) in the order Anseriformes of bird (class Aves).

Description

Dabbling duck with large shovel-shaped black bill. Males have a pale gray and vary in body color from red to paler shades of red with black spots. Females are mottled brown overall.

Range

Found in wetlands, lakes and river mouths in the southern half of South America.
