Overview

The Common Merganser (Mergus merganser) is a species of waterfowl (family Anatidae) in the order Anseriformes of bird (class Aves).

Description

Sleek diving duck with a thin red bill. Males have dark-green head and mostly white body, grey rump and tail. Females and males in non-breeding plumage are largely grey with a brown head, and white chink.

Range

Found in rivers and lakes in forested areas of Europe, Asia and North America.
