Overview

The Kea (Nestor notabilis) is a species of New Zealand parrot (family Strigopidae) in the order parrots (Psittaciformes) of bird (class Aves). It is the world's only alpine parrot.

Description

A large parrot, with mostly olive-green plumage and scarlet underwings visible in flight. The beak is gray with a long curved upper part.

Range

Found in the forested and alpine regions of the South Island of New Zealand.
