The Barred Owl (Strix varia) is a species of owl (family Strigidae) in the order Strigiformes of bird (class Aves).
A large owl. Overall greyish-brown or brown mottled with white. The belly is boldly streaked in a vertical pattern. The rounded head lacks ear tufts. Black eyes. Sexes are similar, but like most birds of prey, the female is larger than the male.
Found in old deciduous, mixed forests and, occasionally, coniferous forests in southern Canada, and most of the eastern United States.
