Overview

The Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus) is a species of new world vulture (family Cathartidae) in the order Cathartiformes of bird (class Aves). It is the only member of the genus Vultur. It is the largest flying bird.

Description

A large black vulture with a ruff of white feathers surrounding the base of the neck. The head and neck are nearly featherless, and are a dull red color. The male has a neck wattle and a large, red comb on the crown of the head. The female is smaller than the male.

Range

Found in the Andes and Santa Marta Mountains in South America.
